Last month Dave Thomson felt that call centre work was getting him down … until he started sleeping rough.

Luckily it was all for a good cause.  Dave and 17 others from Salesforce.com were able to raise almost £50,000 for charity.

On October 18, Dave Thomson, a call centre specialist, and 17 other members of the Salesforce.com team slept rough on the banks of the Thames as part of Byte Night 2012.

“We did it, but it was the worst night in its 15-year history. It was cold and it rained constantly, from 6pm when we arrived, until 6am when we left,” said Dave Thomson.

“And it was absolutely torrential from 3-4am.  I managed to sleep one hour, from 4-5pm.”

“Everyone got soaked and the site was like a swimming pool when we left, but I actually managed to stay dry, thanks to a large plastic bag.”

“The thing that kept us going was knowing that the money was all going to a good cause. We only had to do this for one night. Some people do this every night. I can’t imagine what that’s like”.

Their target was for the 18 from Salesforce.com to raise £20,000 in support of Action for Children. They have now raised almost £50,000, which is unbelievable. And overall the event raised over £850,000 from the 1,000 fund-raisers sleeping out that night. A great result.
