18th July 2012

Domestic & General is celebrating its centenary this year.
To mark the occasion and to celebrate the company’s evolution, Domestic & General offices around the world are hosting their own birthday-themed activities.
Employees at the Brighton contact centre took part in a company-history-themed fancy dress competition, with many dressing as household appliances. Contact centre agent Chrissie Harper won a £100 gift voucher for her washing machine costume. Employees also enjoyed a giant birthday cake and were awarded an extra day of paid holiday.
Founded by Samuel Copley on July 5 1912, Domestic & General began in the Western Australian outback as a small insurance firm providing cover for sheep and cattle transportation.
In 1914, Huddersfield born Copley returned to the UK and set up shop. It wasn’t until 1950 when breakdown cover for early televisions was introduced, the business had its first major breakthrough.
Domestic & General grew rapidly as it responded to the changing lifestyles of the times. From cathode rays in televisions, to kitchen equipment and central heating, the company now provides comprehensive protection for many different household products and appliances.
Ben Dale-Gough, Site Operations Manager at the Brighton office, said: “The success and resilience of the business can be attributed to many things, particularly its adaptability and openness to new markets. We also know that we couldn’t have done it without our employees, who continue to maintain excellent customer service, an intrinsic part of our company ethos.”
