Staff at a Sunderland contact centre enjoyed a day of paralympic sport to mark the first anniversary of the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

Dozens of EDF Energy employees took part in the demonstration games at the company’s customer service centre. The games included boccia, a precision ball sport similar to bowls, and paracanoe, where participants sit in a rowing simulator controlled by a computer.

The employees were joined by boccia world cup athlete Emma Goodchild, who introduced them to the rules of the game and offered advice and tips.

“I was incredibly inspired by the London 2012 Paralympic Games and think it’s more important than ever to keep disability sport in the limelight,” said Margaret Wenham, Internal Communications Advisor at EDF Energy in Sunderland.

“National Paralympic Day provided us with an opportunity to showcase once again the talents of our athletes and continue our efforts in promoting disability sport from grass roots to elite level,” said Tim Hollingsworth, CEO of the British Paralympic Association. “We hope that the popularity of National Paralympic Day continues to grow.”

EDF Energy has pledged that it will support the British Paralympic Association in the lead-up to the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
